Republicanism : a historical theme and a historiographical paradigm. The republican paradigm relating to the nature of both the revolutionary struggle and the early Republic — whether they were inspired by XVIIth century republican ideals or by new democratic, ‘liberal’ values — has been a contested subject of debate in American historiography during the past decades. This paper traces the lines of this debate up to the final consensus reached in the 1990s that actually sees both ideologies, republicanism and liberalism, at work.
