“Every book is a gamble at bes” : The publication of Charles Chesnutt’s The Marrow of Tradition (1901). The Marrow of Tradition was the last of Chesnutt’s books to come out under the imprint of Houghton, Mifflin & Co. This article proposes to show that the commercial failure of the novel, despite the commitment of both author and publisher, held deep implications for this pioneering figure in African-American literature. With this publishing history, essential components of Chesnutt’s literary career are highlighted — the author-publisher, author-reader, and critic-reader relationships.
