This article investigates the nature, the scope and significance of expressions of Caribbean consciousness and solidarity in the context of the Cuban wars of Independence, among black communities in Jamaica and the Turks Islands. The author focuses on the contacts that took place between the Afro-Cuban nationalist leader Antonio Maceo and the peoples of these British Caribbean colonies. He argues that in spite of die barriers erected by Spain and England between Cuban nationalists and the British Caribbean people, a Caribbean consciousness fostering unity and solidarity really emerged on a popular level. He demonstrates that this consciousness was bom out of a common ideal for justice among the colonized.Cet article examine la nature, l’éte...
