This essay tackles the still debated issue of the musical role that the once large black communities from Buenos Aires and the rest of the country played in the making and development of what is Argentine music par excellence, tango. After giving a historical survey of the black presence in the country, the author examines how various musical influences, coming from local populations imported from Africa and also from the African-American diaspora (Cuba, for instance), blended with others to gradually become what is known today as tango.
