Romeo and Juliet in Film : Liberations and Inhibitions This essay analyses a number of adaptations of Romeo and Juliet , which has been the great inspiration for the cinema, giving rise to more films than any other Shakespeare play. Recent films have been marked by stereotyped use of the story and its offshoots, but these very superficial or mechanical features can themselves be interpreted as typical of period and point of view. Psychiatrists define stereotyped behaviour as a way of palliating difficult situations, and this can be a useful way of looking at cliched or unreflective transpositions of Shakespeare’s complexities.
