Literary Prizes and Literary Creation in Great-Britain Over the last 25 years, more and more literary prizes have been created in Great Britain and have assumed considerable importance. After a brief history of the prizes, this paper points out the differences between British and French literary prizes and analyses the reasons why the Booker Prize for Fiction, created in 1969, has now become such a popular literary event. The kind of influence literary prizes play on British novel-writing is another question raised, to which the testimonies of both novelists and critics give answers.
