Significance of Leukocyte- and Other Blood Cells-Derived Ratios in The Diagnosis of Cardiovascular Disease

The aim: to determine the significance of leukocytes- and other blood cells-derived ratios in the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease – acute coronary syndrome (ACS) (unstable angina (UA), ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and Non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI)). Objectives. 1. To establish demographic data and the amounts of venous blood cells (neutrophils, leucocytes, thrombocytes etc.), troponins, lipid metabolism, C-reactive protein (CRP) to the patients with cardiovascular diseases – UA, STEMI and NSTEMI, considering the patient’s gender. 2. To evaluate the ratios of venous blood cells (neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (N/L), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (P/L), white blood cells to platelet ratio (W/P), monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (M/L)) and their possible changes in different cardiovascular diseases, considering patient’s gender. 3. To determine and evaluate the relationship between the amounts of venous blood cells (neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (N/L), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (P/L), white blood cells to platelet ratio (W/P), monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (M/L)) and cardiac injury markers (troponins) in different cardiovascular diseases. A retrospective analysis of demographic and laboratory test data was done for 205 patients who were consulted and treated in Cardiology Department of The Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) Kauno klinikos and examined at a Department of Laboratory Medicine according to selected ICD codes (I20.0, I21.0, I21.4). Results and conclusions. ACS occurred in younger men compared to women, and the smoking was more common among men. Amount of leucocytes and their populations (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes), CRP and troponins did not differ significantly between genders and analysed diseases (UA, STEMI and NSTEMI). Decreased ratio of W/P was observed in the majority of patients having STEMI and NSTEMI, especially in the group of men. Increased ratio of P/L was detected in majority of women with diagnosed STEMI. It can be presumed that detected differences between genders may be due to the presence of female sex hormones and their cardioprotective effect. 3.
