A study of the theoretical movement on Ferdinand de Saussure's manuscript Phonétique

This work seeks to investigate Ferdinand de Saussure’s theoretical movement regarding the phonic aspect of the language (FAL – in Portuguese, AFL), especially in his manuscript entitled Phonétique (1881-1884). The investigation was carried out by dividing the thesis into three distinct moments. In the first one, we established the pre-Saussurean studies that take into account the AFL both the earliest and most representative teachings, and the precepts of nineteenth-century linguists; in the first part of this chapter, we chose to reflect on Plato's Cratylus and the Essay On The Origin Of Languages written by Rousseau. For the second part of the chapter, the nineteenth century, we chose to address some of the most active scholars in AFL’s research, namely Jacob Grimm (1785-1863), August Schleicher (1821-1868) and Hermann Paul (1846-1921), representatives of Comparative Grammar and the Neogrammarian School. In the second moment, we examined the Saussurean research on the AFL in Phonétique and some specific works that addressed the theme, such as: those before this manuscript, the Essai (1874) and the Mémoire (1878), and those more than twenty years later of it, the courses of General Linguistics, from the point of view of the students' notebooks and the posthumous work of Saussure, the Course in General Linguistics. In the third and last moment, we established these two periods and their discussions in relation to Phonétique, and situate our research on the Saussurean theoretical movement in the light of Silveira's studies. Based on the author's precepts, we sought to reflect on this movement by emphasizing the points of tension present in the manuscript text in comparison with both the pre-Saussurean moment and the time of Saussure's classes in Geneva. In this sense, we started with a reflection that puts the linguist at the same time approaching and distancing himself from the notions established by the linguists of the nineteenth century. In addition, it was possible to note that in distancing himself from the studies developed in that century, Saussure establisheed a connection with one of his most striking research goals: his theorizing about language. Based on AFL's Saussurean research, more than two decades before the General Linguistics courses at the University of Geneva, the linguist showed a theoretical movement capable of establishing a shift from the studies of his time, fundamentally empirical, to theorizing. Furthermore, it was possible to observe that as a consequence of this theoretical shifting, there were in 1881-84 precepts that led the linguist to come across definitions, distinctions of terms and concepts responsible for taking him to the notion of the subject of Linguistics. Thus, the Phonétique, written years before the courses of General Linguistics, indicates Saussure’s theoretical movement that does not strain of being repeated in his works, in other words, his search for the Linguistics’ subject: the language.Tese (Doutorado)O presente trabalho teve como objetivo central investigar um movimento teórico do linguista Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) no que diz respeito ao aspecto fônico da língua (AFL), sobretudo no seu manuscrito com o título de Phonétique (1881-84). Para essa investigação dividimos a tese em três momentos distintos. No primeiro, estabelecemos os estudos pré-saussurianos que levam em consideração o AFL, tanto dos ensinamentos mais antigos e representativos como dos preceitos dos linguistas do século XIX; dessa forma, escolhemos, para a primeira parte, refletir sobre o Crátilo de Platão e o Ensaio sobre a origem das línguas de Rousseau e, para a segunda parte, ou seja, para o século XIX, optamos por abordar alguns dos estudiosos que mais se dedicaram à investigação do AFL, a saber: Jacob Grimm (1785-1863), August Schleicher (1821-1868) e Hermann Paul (1846-1921), representantes tanto da Gramática Comparada quanto da Escola Neogramática. No segundo momento, examinamos a pesquisa saussuriana sobre o AFL no Phonétique e em alguns trabalhos específicos que abordaram o tema, tais como: aqueles antes desse manuscrito, o Essai (1874) e o Mémoire (1878), e aqueles mais de vinte anos depois dele, os cursos de Linguística Geral, sob a ótica dos cadernos dos alunos e da obra póstuma de Saussure, o Curso de Linguística Geral. No terceiro e último momento, estabelecemos esses dois períodos e suas discussões em relação ao Phonétique, e situamos nossa pesquisa acerca do movimento saussuriano à luz dos estudos de Silveira (2007). Baseados nos preceitos da autora, buscamos refletir sobre esse movimento assinalando os pontos de tensão presentes no texto manuscrito em comparação tanto com o momento pré-saussuriano quanto com o momento das aulas de Saussure em Genebra. Neste sentido, partimos para uma reflexão que coloca o linguista ao mesmo tempo aproximando-se e distanciando-se das noções estabelecidas pelos linguistas do século XIX. Além disso, foi possível notar que, ao se deslocar dos estudos desenvolvidos nesse século, Saussure estabelece uma conexão com um de seus mais marcantes objetivos de pesquisa, isto é, o de teorizar sobre a língua. Com base na pesquisa saussuriana do AFL, mais de duas décadas antes dos cursos de Linguística Geral na Universidade de Genebra, o linguista mostra um movimento teórico capaz de estabelecer um deslocamento dos estudos de sua época, fundamentalmente empírico, para a teorização. Ademais, foi possível observar que, como consequência desse deslocamento, há em 1881-84 preceitos que levam o linguista a se deparar com definições, distinções de termos e conceitos responsáveis por levá-lo à noção do objeto da ciência que ele fundava. Assim, o Phonétique, escrito anos antes dos cursos de Linguística Geral, indica um movimento teórico de Saussure que não cansa de se repetir em seus trabalhos, isto é, sua busca pelo objeto da Linguística: a língua
