Each of these fragments was salvaged from the covers of younger manuscripts, into which they had been recycled. The fact that the writing on these fragments is clearly in an insular half-uncial script with distinctive Irish characteristics raises important questions about the origin of this early copy of the Etymologiae and when and how it ended up in St. Gall.
