This paper presents the important issues pertaining to the development of a precision rapid metal forming process. A five-axis configuration provides a flexible building capability to produce free-form fabrication capability. The laser cladding process is able to produce functional mechanical parts and machining capability is able to produce industrial grade surface quality. A machine configuration that combines the laser cladding and CNC machining processes is presented.
