See the abstract above.In this 4,150-word review essay, I highlight key points from Pope Francis' 2013 apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel), and as I go, I connect certain points he makes with the thought of the American Jesuit Renaissance specialist and cultural historian Walter J. Ong (1912-2003; Ph.D. in English, Harvard University, 1955). Because Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope, it strikes me as worthwhile to call attention to these connections.
