Working Memory and Selective Attention in Interpreting: Cognitive Development and Improvement Strategies

Questa tesi di ricerca descrive lo svolgimento di un progetto sperimentale e interdisciplinare con l’obiettivo di studiare l’evoluzione di due processi cognitivi, la memoria di lavoro (ML) e l’attenzione selettiva, negli studenti della Laurea magistrale in Interpretazione del Dipartimento di Interpretazione e Traduzione (DIT) dell’Università di Bologna. Lo studio era di carattere longitudinale e ha coinvolto quattro gruppi di studenti. La prima coorte, formata da un gruppo di studio di studenti di interpretazione (25) e da un gruppo di controllo di studenti di traduzione (19), ha svolto una batteria di test di memoria e attenzione selettiva tre volte, all’inizio, a metà e alla fine della Laurea magistrale. La seconda coorte, formata da un gruppo di studio di studenti di interpretazione (21) e da un gruppo di controllo di studenti di traduzione (36), ha svolto la stessa batteria di test due volte, all’inizio e alla fine del primo anno della Laurea magistrale. Sono stati utilizzati sei test di memoria, di cui cinque sono i test di memoria verbale della batteria “TEMA” e uno è un test di ML, “N-back task (letter stimuli)”. Inoltre, sono stati svolti tre test di attenzione selettiva, “Auditory Selective Attention Task (ASAT)”, “Centre for Research on Safe Driving Attentional Network Task (CRSD-ANT) – Arrows” e “Color Word Stroop with Keyboard Responding”. Per i gruppi di studio sono stati raccolti anche dei dati sull’esercizio di interpretazione autonomo e sugli esami di interpretazione. È emerso un miglioramento dell’efficienza della ML negli studenti di interpretazione, mentre non sono stati riscontrati vantaggi per l’attenzione selettiva. Dall’analisi dell’interazione tra test, esercizio autonomo ed esami nei gruppi di studio con dei modelli di regressione, si è osservato che ML e attenzione selettiva influenzano positivamente il rendimento accademico, mentre l’esercizio autonomo non ha alcun effetto diretto sui risultati degli esami.The present research thesis describes the development of an experimental interdisciplinary project aiming at studying the evolution of two cognitive processes, working memory (WM) and selective attention, in the students of the Master’s Degree in Interpreting of the Department of Interpreting and Translation (DIT) of the University of Bologna. It was a longitudinal study in which four groups of students took part. The first group was formed of a study subgroup of interpreting students (25) and a control subgroup of translation students (19). Participants took a battery of memory and selective attention tests three times, at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the Master’s Degree. The second group was formed of a study subgroup of interpreting students (21) and a control subgroup of translation students (36) and they took the same test battery twice, at the beginning and at the end of the first year of a two-year Master’s Degree. The tests used were six memory tests, of which five are the verbal memory tests of the “TEMA” battery and one is a WM test, “N-back task (letter stimuli)”. Then three selective attention tests were administered, “Auditory Selective Attention Task (ASAT)”, “Centre for Research on Safe Driving Attentional Network Task (CRSD-ANT) – Arrows” and “Color Word Stroop with Keyboard Responding”. For both study subgroups also data about autonomous interpreting exercise and interpreting exam results were collected. The results highlighted an improvement of WM efficiency in interpreting students, whereas no advantages were found for selective attention. From the analysis of the interaction of tests, autonomous exercise and exams in the study subgroups through regression models, it emerged that WM and selective attention have a positive influence on academic performance. Instead, autonomous exercise has no direct effect on exam results
