Retour vers la matrice : le Westworld (Mondwest) de Michael Crichton (1973)

International audienceThis paper focuses on Michael Crichton’s Westworld (1973), which is the starting point of the HBO series Westworld (2016-). The film needs to be considered against the backdrop of the US counter- culture of the 1970s. As a product of the new Hollywood era, it plays unashamedly on different film genres, primarily science-fiction and Western, but also the horror film and the thriller. The presence of Yul Brynner acting as a robot gunslinger villain adds to the ironical stance of the film, which debunks Western masculinity and the consumer society, together with (already!) a critique of the intermingling of the real and the simulacrum. Although the series uses the main narrative line of Crichton’s film – an amusement park in which very real-looking robots rebel – it does not follow the film’s distanced point of view and its campy dimension, as it focuses on the androids and puts forward other philosophical and technological issues.Cet article se penche sur le film de Michael Crichton Westworld (1973) qui est la matrice de la série Westworld (2016-) diffusée sur HBO. Ce film (Mondwest en français), qu’il faut replacer dans le contexte de la contre-culture américaine des années 1970 et du nouvel Hollywood, pratique une hybridité générique jubilatoire et mélange hardiment science fiction et western, film d’horreur et thriller. La présence de Yul Brynner en robot gunslinger nourrit la distance ironique de l’œuvre, qui remet en cause les codes de la masculinité du Far West, de la société de consommation, et déjà, les rapports entre réel et simulacre. Si la série a repris l’argument narratif principal du film de 1973 – un parc de loisirs où les robots plus vrais que nature se rebellent – elle ne reprend pas la dimension camp du film de 1973, dans la mesure où l’accent est mis sur les androïdes et des problématiques philosophiques et technologiques différentes
