Specialization serves an important purpose in health services, ensuring resources are used efficiently and patients can access specialized skills and interventions. However, specialization also results in services being concentrated in fewer locations, with less patient choice. Focussing upon the example of gender-identity services for trans people in England, this paper outlines contemporary debates regarding hormone prescription pathways and argues that concepts of “specialization” in health care may at times disadvantage minority populations who have needs that are uncommon but not clinically complex.
