The wing area behind the pylon-wing junction of conventional civil aircraft configurations with underwing-mounted turbofan engines is susceptible to local flow separation at high angles of attack, which potentially impacts the maximum lift performance of the aircraft. With further advances in turbofan engine technology, bypass-ratios will reach levels of larger than 15:1. As long as no drastic configuration changes are introduced, these engines will need to be coupled even closer to the wing which limits the extent of the inboard slat further, resulting in stall-inducing flow separation at high angles of attack.
