The burden of hospitalizations driven by exacerbation of acute heart failure remains unacceptably high. The associated use of hospital resources drives increasing patient, caregiver, and economic costs. Noninvasive telemedical systems investigated in randomized controlled trials have failed to demonstrate to reduce hospitalization rates probably because of the indirect (non-linear) relationship of the measured biological signals with the patient congestion status. Instead, there is increasing evidence that direct measure of intracardiac and pulmonary artery pressure can effectively guide heart failure management and reduce hospitalizations.
