Faculty of Engineering.This thesis investigates the viability of using dynamic-based ‘damage fingerprints’ in combination with artificial neural network (ANN) techniques and principal component analysis (PCA) to identify defects in civil engineering structures. Vibration-based damage detection techniques are global methods and are based on the principle that damage alters both the physical properties, such as mass, stiffness and damping, as well as the dynamic properties of a structure.
