The recent trend of business mergers in France. Since the last War France has witnessed a large-scale movement towards the structural reorganisation of businesses. This movement is generally explained by reference to the rapid growth of channels of international trade. The new dimensions of markets and the keenness of international competition no doubt constrain French firms to rationalise their management and to look for financial and commercial power to enabh then to stand up effectively to foreign groups. The Vth Economic and Social Development Plan, moreover, attaches « national priority » to the regrouping of industry.
