This paper deals with the Stoics'' attempts to redefine the city in political and philosophical terms while taking the presence of slavery into account. There was no doubt, to be sure, among the earliest promoters of Stoicism, an egalitarian conception of the individual within society ; yet, by the second century B. C., slavery was effectively part of the social models proposed by the Stoics. The Roman empire offered new hopes for a reconsideration of the question of slavery within society. While abolitionism was non-existent, the territorial vastness and diversity of populations that characterized the empire led to reflections, in particular, on how to improve the living conditions of slaves and their legal status.Se trata de comprender có...
