An emblem is composed of three parts. Their Latin names are inscriptio, pictura and subscriptio. However, in the Renaissance, as emblems were allegorically commented on, the picture was also known as the “body” of the emblem while the subscription was known as its “soul”. The aim of this paper is to explore the transmuting process at stake from the emblematic treatment of Philomela’s plight in emblem books to the way the body of the actor may transfer it on stage. In other words, I try to connect two different fields of research : living theatre and scholarly mythological research.
