La postposition japonaise wa et les opérations de thématisation, de mise en contraste et de focalisation

The Japanese Postposition wa and the Operations of Topicalization, Contrasting and Focalization. In Japanese, an explicit topic is often marked by the postposition wa. The co-utterer will notice it at once, but the question is : will he interpret it properly ? It is a fact that the values of wa go beyond the mere indication of the validity frame of what some linguists call a rheme . This article refers to four operations : topicalization, selection from a set, contrasting and focalization. In Japanese, topicalization can be seen as the result of a selection, while contrasting articulates both topicalization and focalization. The recourse to set theory to represent the dynamics of wa should make things clearer.En japonais, le thème explicite est souvent marqué par la postposition wa. Le fonctionnement sémantique de wa ne se limite pas à signaler le cadre de validité de ce que certains linguistes qualifient de rhème. On examine ici différentes opérations : la thématisation bien sûr, mais également la sélection d’un élément à l’intérieur d’un ensemble, la mise en contraste et la focalisation. En effet, en japonais, la thématisation résulte d’une sélection, tandis que la mise en contraste marquée par wa joue le rôle de trait d’union entre thématisation et focalisation.
