Martin Eden, or the romantic disillusionment of a realist writer. This paper aims at questioning the central paradox of the novel : why does an artist, who had been so determined and eager to build a literary body of work, decide to take his life precisely when he eventually experiences success and a form of recognition ? What can be said of a disappointment that is powerful enough to push to suicide ?
