The wealth of archival materials in the British Isles is unrivalled in its quantity and quality, except by the Vatican. The storage of archives has continued in unbroken tradition since Domesday Book in 1086. The Public Record Office is the central and largest record office in the country and has links with other record offices. Because of the diversity of public and private repositories which may keep archives, several tools of access have been developed, like the National Register of Archives or the Guide to Archives Resources in the United Kingdom.
