Approaches to the system of oral English. A number of grammatical distinctions which pupils learn to recognize in writing are not rendered in speech. As may be seen from the errors found in university student papers, this can lead to long-lasting confusion in the minds of learners if teachers are not aware of the dangers. Basing her demonstration on experimental classes in the final year of primary school (a study carried out by the National Institute for Pedagogical Research : INRP), the author shows that it is possible to get young pupils to “ reflect ” on the grammar of oral English and to make them aware of regular correspondences between spelling and pronunciation.
