Doris Lessing’s The Memoirs of a Survivor : through the Walls of Representation This paper aims at defining the nature of Memoirs of a Survivor as a fictional narrative. Through its formal structure and mode of writing, Lessing’s novel encroaches upon a certain number of literary traditions and conventions of discourse. The title (“ through the walls of representation”) refers to the plot of the book of course, but also (and to a greater extent ) to the notion of hybridization, as well as to that of threshold. Playing upon its very title, Memoirs of a Survivor places itself on the borderline between novelistic narrative and historical chronicle, thus questioning the validity, or at least the “scientificity” of some historiographical devices. Secondly, the particular relationship between the two rival universes of the novel calls for a development on the concept of heterotopia. This concept seems to constitute both the basis and the “ ideological ” outcome of the book : the somewhat unexpected combination of a religious stance (millenarianism and experience of the sublime - which Lyotard might see as a “postmodern” occurrence) and of a typically postmodernist practice (derepresentation).Cet article cherche à s’interroger sur la nature même du récit de fiction qu’est The Memoirs of a Survivor. A travers son organisation formelle et son écriture, ce roman de Doris Lessing empiète sur un certain nombre de traditions littéraires et de conventions discursives. Le titre “le récit passe-muraille” se réfère bien sûr à l’intrigue du livre, mais aussi et surtout à la notion d’hybridation, ainsi qu’à la notion de franchissement d’un ou de plusieurs seuils. Jouant de son titre même, The Memoirs of a Survivor se place d’ abord sur une ligne frontière entre récit romanesque et chronique historique, mettant ainsi en cause sinon la crédibilité, du moins la “scientificité” de certains procédés historiographiques. En second lieu, le mode relationnel qui régit les deux univers concurrents du roman ouvre un développement sur le concept d’hétérotopie. C’est précisément ce dernier concept qui paraît constituer à la fois le fondement et l’aboutissement “idéologique” du livre : la conjugaison insolite d’une démarche religieuse (millénarisme et expérience du sublime -que Lyotard pourrait qualifier de “postmoderne”) et d’une démarche propre à de nombreux romans postmodemistes (déreprésentation).Murat Jean-christophe.
