Populations of a large-celled Stephanodiscus species from lakes in North Germany were compared with Kützing's original material of Cyclotella rotula (= Stephanodiscus rotula (Kütz.) Hendey). Morphological differences were found and a new name is therefore proposed: Stephanodiscus neoastraea sp. nov. Håkansson & Hickel
