Automation and quantification of EEG interpretation were developed by encoding known EEG characteristics into computer algorithms. For localized supratentorial brain lesions, features representing increased slow activity, decreased normal background activity and asymmetry between homologous regions were developed. Epileptic spikes and sharp waves were recognized as waves with characteristic morphologies compared to a continuously updated background activity.
