Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi(Bb). It is believed that the robust inflammatory response induced by the host’s innate immune system is responsible for the clinical manifestations associated with Bb infection. The macrophage plays a central role in the immune response to many bacterial infections and is thought to play a central role in activation of the innate immune response to Bb.
