This article discusses key moments to understand the origins of U.S. military presence in the Greater Caribbean Region, giving special attention to the case in the Antilles. Modern armed forces made their irreversible appearance in Caribbean countries like Cuba, Puerto Rico and Haiti before the economic and political disruption brought by the Great Depression of 1929. The islands served as the first territories in the late 19th century to be directly intervened by the U.S. Marines Corporation and the U.S. Army.
