Strongly influenced by T. S. Eliot's work, Hart Crane's poetry is a mix of American modernism and romanticism. Though born in Ohio in 1899, he chose to move to New York City as a young adult. He embraced the urban environment, and his work was inspired by the culture of the city. His stylized, ambitious poetry is still lauded by poets and critics alike for his determination to meet modernity with optimism.
