Cientificidade e Relevância Social -I:: Controvérsias sobre a Cientificidade da Psicologia e das Ciências Sociais

The relations between the scientific status and the social relevance of the behavioral sciences are discussed.These sciences are viewed as an important part of the cultural paradigms which shape and regulate the individuals incontemporary society. More specifically, the objective is to understand how a scientific language may be constitutive of theindividual's "inner reality" ”” his beliefs and values, and, above all, how he accounts for his own actions. This article dealswith the philosophical literature on the scientific status of the explanatory language of the behavioral sciences which providesthe basis for the discussion. The discussion focus on the controversy about the role of causes versus reasons in the explanatorycontext of these sciences. Such controversy reflects different definitions of these terms, which are derived from the two mainviews of science in the contemporary debate: objectivism and pragmatism. Four main positions are identified. These positionscorrespond to different combinations of the roles which are attributed to causes and reasons in the explanatory context of thesesciences.Este artigo está voltado para uma discussão das relações entre a questão da cientificidade e a da relevância social,no caso da psicologia e das ciências sociais. Nesse sentido estas ciências são vistas enquanto parte dos paradigmas culturais que participam do processo de construção e regulação do sujeito na sociedade contemporânea. Mais especificamente, o objetivo é tentar entender como uma linguagem científica pode passar a ser constitutiva do que o sujeito "descobre" ser sua "realidade interna" ”” suas crenças e valores, e, mais ainda, as próprias explicações de suas ações. Neste artigo é abordada a discussão filosófica sobre o estatuto científico da linguagem expíanatória dessas ciências, focalizando a controvérsia sobre o papel de causas versus razões no contexto explanatório. Esla controvérsia deriva de diferentes definições dadas a esses termos a partir de concepções alternativas de cientificidade dominantes no quadro contemporâneo: a objetivista e a pragmática.
