Devotedly read and persistently criticized trough time, novels give rise to controversies and contribute to reflections and dialogues between authors and readers in different times. This work discusses this genre and its evolution, from the end of the 18th century, in Europe and America, to the early and mid-20th century. Which particular relationship did female readers of the past establish with novels? How was the debate about the aesthetic and moral value of a literary work handled?
