Research on hoarding accumulated over the last two decades has shown that hoarding disorder is a phenomenon separate from both obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), and that hoarding disorder burdens both the community and the families of people who hoard. More importantly, hoarding interferes with the daily functioning of the individuals with hoarding problems. Several self-report, interview-based, and observational measures have been established to assess hoarding symptoms, but there are no validated measures of the daily activities with which hoarding interferes and therefore clinicians and researchers cannot assess the specific nature of the impairment due to hoarding.
