LOG 102: Transportation & Distribution

Description: Tacoma Community College offers a Logistics course program, funded in part by the National Science Foundation, to provide students with the professional skills necessary to succeed in warehouse, inventory, and supply chain management. Logistics 102, Transportation and Distribution, seeks to introduce students to overview of the logistics sector of the economy through a combination of in-person and online hands-on discussions, lectures, readings, and projects. The course broadly orients students to âto the role and importance of transportation and distribution of cargo in the nationâs economy and overview the operations of each mode of the transportation industry. Students will be introduced to the carrier cost structures and operating characteristics, and public policy as it relates to transportation regulations.â In addition, students will learn âpractical aspects of transportation and distribution such as planning, routing, scheduling and loading cargo, and adhering to regulatory, safety, security and administrative requirements.âCourse Information: Logistics 102 Transportation and Distribution is offered at Tacoma Community College as a blended learning course, containing both online and in-person components. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to describe the evolution of transportation systems in North America, explain transportationâs role in logistics and supply chain management, identify various transport modes and intermodal combinations available for inbound and outbound freight, value added distribution, arranging transportation, connect transportation models with efficient loading and unloading processes, identify major tools for transportation policy, recognize unsafe equipment, material, or operations, understand proper unloading procedures, develop a working knowledge of industry terminology, and be familiar with security measures for transportation networks.For orientation purposes, readers should begin with the document titled Instructor Manual â LOG 102. This detailed letter to instructors contains a course overview, descriptions for each of the modules by week, and suggested quiz questions.
