Tres damas suicidas en la escena del Romanticismo español

The social, economic, political and religious disappointment brought about by the change from the Ancien Régime to the new bourgeois society was crystallized in a new mythology: romantic love. The appearance of heroes vanquished by the irrationality of their passion, which found no place in the usual profiles of masculinity, became known as the feminization of suicide. Thus, theoretically, love and death retreated to the realm of femini­nity. The images of women profiled by literary romanticism became stereotyped as they began to deserve one of the most beautiful dreams of Western culture. However, within the narrow margins of individuality that romantic heroines appropriate from the stereotype that conforms them, the collapse of the illusion may already be discerned. To address this question, a comparative study of three feminine suicides on the Spanish romantic theater stage are proposed here: Elvira’s (Macías), Leonor’s (El trovador) and Clara’s (Amor venga sus agravios).El desencanto social, económico, político y religioso que acompañó al cambio del Antiguo Régimen en la nueva sociedad burguesa, cristalizó en una nueva mitología: el amor romántico. La consiguiente aparición de héroes vencidos por la irracionalidad de la pasión, que no encontraba acomodo en los habituales perfiles de la masculinidad, se dio en conocer como proceso de feminización del suicidio. Teóricamente, pues, amor y muerte se replega­ban al ámbito de la feminidad. Las imágenes de mujer perfiladas por el Romanticismo literario se veían, así, abocadas al estereotipo, al convertirse en valedoras de uno de los más bellos sueños de la cultura occidental. No obstante, en los estrechos márgenes de individua­lidad que las heroínas románticas escamotean al estereotipo que las conforma, se puede prefigurar la quiebra de la ilusión. Para abordar esta cuestión, se propone aquí un estudio comparativo de tres suicidios femeninos cometidos sobre las tablas del teatro romántico español, los de Elvira (Macías), Leonor (El trovador) y Clara (Amor venga sus agravios)
