KHALED HOSSEINI AND HIS WESTERN IDEOLOGY IN NOVEL THE KITE RUNNER

The novel presents Afghan society which can be classified into social groups and social classes. The social groups consist of Taliban and educated group while the lower and upper class belong to the social classes. Furthermore, the novel also contains several ideologies that influence the social group and social class perspective. The existence of the different ideologies makes one of ideologies becomes superior and other inferiors. The superior ideology dominates and it is stronger than other ideologies. It tries to support the ideas and voices brought so that it becomes a superior one. Superior ideology is a dominant ideology reflecting the author’s ideology. It brings author’s ideas and voices developed based on the author’s perspectives or point of view. Moreover the work written is related to the author’s life and experience. Hosseini as an author comes from Afghan cultural background. Even though he migrates to America and never comes back to Afghanistan, he is still regarded as an Afghan. It is supported by Huntington who states “a member state is a country fully identified culturally with one civilization” (135). The statement shows that Hosseini is still regarded as Afghan because he was born and grown up in Afghanistan cultural background. Consequently, he lives in eastern and western country; Afghanistan and America that reflect eastern and western ideologies. According to Barry (2002), western people think that they are superior people and regard eastern people as inferior (194). Such way of thinking influences people’s way of thinking as well as their ideology. Finally, the research entitled Khaled Hosseini and His Western Ideology. This is conducted by applying Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory, dialogism criticism. It is to know the ideologies especially the dominant ideology reflecting the author’s ideology found in the novel The Kite Runner
