Let\u27s Go Outside: Supporting Teachers In Using Outdoor Learning For All Subjects K-8

Research has demonstrated that outdoor education has a positive impact on student academic success as reflected in grades and test scores and retention of knowledge as well as problem solving skills, engagement, and social emotional growth. It has also been shown through research that the greatest barriers to outdoor education arise from teacher concerns about safety, loss of expert status, and lack of time and space. The professional development and teacher support materials designed for this project focus on helping teachers understand the benefits of outdoor education and providing them knowledge and skills to overcome the barriers. Professional development materials included in this project directed at a K-8 suburban charter school with an environmental literacy mandate, comprise both a self-study presentation that overviews teacher concerns and offers suggestions as well as a instructor-led outdoor experience for educators to help them develop skills and confidence. A second component of the materials is a repository of lessons linked to state standards. The goal of this project is to help the charter school where it is being implemented to develop a place-based learning program and culture so that students can attain the myriad benefits associated with outdoor learning
