Social Emotional Learning Curriculum And Manipulatives Designed For Deaf Hard Of Hearing Students From Diverse Home Languages

The population of students that are hard of hearing that come from multilingual homes is a distinct population that has specific needs. The purpose of this Capstone project is on how to better instruct students that are Deaf and Hard of Hearing that come from multilingual homes. After researching and discussing the difficulties and needs of this specific population, including Deaf and Hard of Hearing and English language learner definitions, environmental factors, teacher education, and best practices, the author determined that a way to support this population could be through communication tools for families and others for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students that come from multilingual homes. The outcome was a Social- Emotional unit plan, lessons, and translated flashcards that students can use to better express their emotions and needs with others. This project helps adults and other students communicate with American Sign Language signs and visuals at home and school, as well as show the need for collaboration between educators that instruct DHH ELs. After implementing this project, families and peers will better understand and communicate emotions and needs with Deaf and Hard of Hearing that come from multilingual homes
