Error terjadi ketika siswa tidak tahu jawaban yang benar dan melakukan kesalahan tersebut berulang kali. Di sisi lain, mistake terjadi karena peserta didik gagal untuk menyampaikan pemahamannya. Penelitian ini membahas apakah penyimpangan morfologi, sintaksis, dan lexical yang dilakukan oleh peserta didik universitas tergolong dalam error  atau mistake. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menjawab enam rumusan masalah yang tertera pada Bab Satu. Yaitu: 1) Apa  jenis error morfologi yang ditemukan dalam komposisi tulisan siswa? 2) Apa jenis mistake morfologi yang ditemukan dalam komposisi tulisan siswa? 3) Apa jenis error Sintaktikal yang ditemukan dalam komposisi tulisan siswa? 4) Apa jenis mistake Sintaktikal yang ditemukan dalam komposisi tulisan siswa? 5) Apa jenis error leksikal ditemukan dalam komposisi tulisan siswa? 6) Apa jenis mistake leksikal yang ditemukan dalam komposisi tulisan siswa?  Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif. Desain penelitian ini adalah kualitatif yang menganalisis tulisan siswa. Ini tidak memiliki pengaturan khusus karena data dari penelitian ini adalah tulisan peserta didik yang telah dikumpulkan. Subyek penelitian adalah komposisi tulisan dari tiga peserta didik; komposisi tulisan yang baik, komposisi tulisan rata-rata, dan komposisi tulisan buruk. Data dari penelitian ini adalah kata, frasa, dan kalimat yang mengandung error  dan mistake dari tiga komponen linguistik; morfologi, sintaksis, dan leksikal. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah komposisi tulisan peserta didik yang telah disalin. Peneliti mengumpulkan data. Ia juga melakukan tes untuk memperkuat data. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: 1) Error di morfologi ditemukan pada ketiga subyek. Dalam komposisi tulisan yang baik, kesalahan morfologi berrupa verb tense, bentuk kata kerja, modal, dan artikel. Sementara dalam komposisi tulisan rata- rata, kesalahan morfologi berupa verb tense, bentuk kata kerja, artikel, dan akhiran kata benda. Kemudian, dalam komposisi tulisan buruk, ditemukan verb tense, bentuk kata kerja, kesepakatan subjek-kata kerja, artikel, dan akhiran kata benda sebagai kesalahan morfologi. 2) Mistake pada morfologi hanya ditemukan dalam komposisi tulisan buruk. Yaitu verb tense. 3) Dalam komposisi yang baik, kesalahan sintaksis omitted word, unnecessary word, and run-on sentence. Dalam komposisi tulisan rata- rata, ada word order, omitted word, unnecessary word, run-on sentence, and fragment sentence. Terakhir, omitted word, unnecessary word, run-on sentence, and fragment sentence ditemukan dalam komposisi tulisan buruk. 4) Mistake pada Sintaks ditemukan dalam komposisi tulisan baik omitted word and unnecessary word. Dalam komposisi tulisan rata-rata, yaitu omitted word, unnecessary word, and run-on sentence. Terakhir, dalam komposisi tulisan buruk, ada omitted word and unnecessary word yang menajdi jenis kesalahan di bagian ini. 5) Error pada leksikal dalam komposisi tulisan baik adalah pilihan kata, penggunaan tidak resmi, kata ganti, kata depan, dan ejaan. Sementara itu, pemilihan kata, bentuk kata, penggunaan tidak resmi, kata ganti, dan ejaan yang ditemukan dalam komposisi tulisan rata-rata. Setelah itu, pilihan kata, bentuk kata, penggunaan tidak resmi, kata ganti, dan preposisi ditemukan di komposisi tulisan yang buruk. 6) Mistake pada leksikal hanya ditemukan dalam komposisi tulisan rata-rata. Yaitu ejaan. Dari penelitian tersebut, terbukti bahwa kesalahan peserta didik dalam menulis tidak hanya tergologong pada error tetapi juga mistake. Meskipun komposisi subjek pada penelitian ini adalah naratif, peneliti meyakini bahwa peserta didik juga akan melakukan kesalahan serupa di komposisi lain seperti deskriptif, prosedur, dll. Abstract People define errors and mistakes interchangeably. However, they are actually different. Errors occur when the learner does not know the correct answer and are committed repeatedly. On the other hand, mistakes occur because the learner fail to deliver his comprehension. This study discusses whether the deviations in morphology, syntax, and lexical committed by university learners belong to errors or mistakes. It is conducted to answer the six research questions in Chapter One. Those are 1) What Morphological errors are found in the leaners’ writing composition? 2) What Morphological mistakes are found in the leaners’ writing composition? 3) What Syntactical errors are found in the leaners’ writing composition? 4) What Syntactical mistakes are found in the leaners’ writing composition? 5) What Lexical errors are found in the leaners’ writing composition? 6) What Lexical mistakes are found in the leaners’ writing composition? This research is a descriptive research. The research design of this study is qualitative design that analyzes the learners’ writing tasks. This study does not have a specific setting because the data of the study are the learners’ writing task which have been collected. The subjects of the study are three learners’ writing composition; good writing composition, average writing composition, and poor writing composition. The data of the study are from the learners’ words, phrases, and sentences which contain deviation of three linguistic components; morphology, syntax, and lexical. The sources of the data in this study are the learners’ writing composition that are copied. The researcher herself collects the data. Also, she conducts a test to strengthen the data. The findings of the research show that: 1) The morphological errors are found in the three subjects. In the good composition, the morphological errors are verb tense, verb form, modal, and article while in the average writing composition, the morphological errors are verb tense, verb form, article, and noun ending. Then, in the poor writing composition, there are found verb tense, verb form, subject-verb agreement, article, and noun ending as the morphological errors. 2) The morphological mistake is only found in the poor writing composition. It is only verb tense. 3) In the good composition, the syntactical errors are omitted word, unnecessary word, and run-on sentence. In the average writing composition, there are word order, omitted word, unnecessary word, run-on sentence, and fragment sentence. Finally, omitted word, unnecessary word, run-on sentence, and fragment sentence are found in the poor writing composition. 4) Syntactical mistakes found in the good composition are omitted word and unnecessary word. In the average composition, they are omitted word, unnecessary word, and run-on sentence. The last, in the poor writing composition, there are omitted word and unnecessary word.5) Lexical errors in the good composition are word choice, informal usage, pronoun, preposition, and spelling while word choice, word form, informal usage, pronoun, and spelling are found in the average composition. Afterwards, word choice, word form, informal usage, pronoun, and preposition are found in the poor learner composition. 6) Lexical mistake is only found in the average writing composition. That is spelling. From the study, it was proven that the learners’ deviations do not only belong to errors but also mistakes.
