Applying the method of the ideal section to calculate the concrete and Steel composite sections in elastic regime, two purposes appear: 1) To establish an adequacy criterion to avoid the paradoxal case in which the standard rolled steel section alone reaches more resistance, in elastic phase, than reinforcing it with a concrete slab forming a composite beam. 2) To define a criterion to obtain the best pre-design, intending to reach, at the same time, the admissible stresses in the most compressed concrete fibre and in the most tensioned steel. Finally, the results corresponding to some frequent steel sections and concrete qualities usual in building, have been settled in tables of easy practical application, for the pre-design of section...
