Presa de Migoelou

This hydroelectric installation is on the higher section of the Gave d'Arrens, in the French Pyrenees. The dam has been constructed by the Electricité de France. The power station takes advantage of a hydraulic fall of 1840 ms, and its power is 124,000 kVA, with a yearly energy output of 400 million kWh. The main project is situated at a height of 2255 ms, so that it has been constructed during four successive summer periods. The height of the dam is 25 ms, and consists of a series of vaults. The volume of water it can hold is very considerable, being of the order of 17 x 106 m3. The foundations of the dam are granite, covered by a moraine of 20 ms maximum depth. The vaults of the dam, of 25 ms span, form two straight lines in planform, following the configuration of the ground. The thickness of these vaults is 2 m, and on the upstream side the slope is 0.6. The abutments have a constant thickness of 2 ms, and the one situated at the meeting point of the two straight sections has been designed to meet the most adverse possible situations. Statical calculations are based on the assumption of a temperature range between —15 and 35" C, and the thrust of ice formations has been disregarded. The project includes other smaller dams. La presa se ha construido por cuenta de Electricité de France. Tiene un desnivel utilizable de 1.840 m y la potencia instalada es de 124.000 kVA, cuya producción se ha estimado en 400 millones de kWh/año. La obra se encuentra a 2.255 m de altitud, por lo que se ha construido por fases durante cuatro estaciones estivales. El dique de cierre, constituido por una serie de bóvedas, tiene 25 m de altura máxima y embalsará unos 17 x 106 m3, lo cual constituye una gran reserva de energía. El terreno de asiento de cimientos es granítico, recubierto por una morena de 20 m de potencia máxima. Las bóvedas, de 25 m de luz, se han dispuesto según las alineaciones rectas, debido a la configuración del terreno. Su espesor, en un plano horizontal, es de 1 m, y su talud, aguas arriba, de 0,60x1. Los contrafuertes tienen espesor constante de 2 m. El que se ha levantado en la unión de las dos alineaciones antes referidas, se ha calculado como un estribo y en las condiciones de estabilidad más desfavorables. Los cálculos estáticos se han realizado admitiendo una temperatura variable de — 15 °C a + 35 °C y despreciando el empuje que pudieran ocasionar los hielos. Completan este aprovechamiento otras presas de menor consideración. Los trabajos iniciales se dedicaron a la habilitación de accesos. Dada la gran altitud del paraje, fue preciso construir un teleférico
