Does the classroom environment have a positive effect on adolescents’ attitudes and test scores in reading? This research project was completed with sixteen students who participated in an Alternative Learning Program. Students were given one survey in October, prior to changes in the classroom, and another in January, after changes had been made. They were also given an electronic, standardized assessment at the beginning of the school year and another in January. Findings suggest the importance of allowing students to choose what they read, giving students at least 20 minutes to read during class, and creating comfortable seating during reading time.
