Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is a debilitating herpesvirus among sea turtles, particularly green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas). It is characterized by tumor-like growths forming typically around the eyes, mouth, and neck. FP has been linked to excess nutrient runoff from pollutants such as fertilizers and pesticides, and the invasive algal species hookweed (Hypnea musciformis). FP has posed as a huge threat to turtle populations leaving many ecological services and systems at risk; the cultural impact, however, has yet to be explore thoroughly. Turtles represent ancient symbols of longevity, wisdom, and creation within cultures around the world. This is an extensive review of the impact of FP on both the ecology and mythos of the sea turtle
