How do effective teachers promote a culturally relevant mathematics curriculum?

This capstone explores what makes an effective culturally relevant mathematics teacher. Culturally relevant teachers incorporate three common themes into their curriculum: constructing knowledge, creating a culturally relevant classroom environment and developing sociopolitical awareness among students. Constructing knowledge is separated into three sections, building on prior knowledge, using a constructivist approach and teaching relevant knowledge. A culturally relevant classroom environment includes building community, establishing high expectations and affirming differences. Developing a sociopolitical awareness involves preparing students to ask questions and to question their role and responsibility in society as well as acting to change social inequalities. In order to collect practical and useful culturally relevant mathematics lessons two effective culturally relevant teachers were observed while they taught a culturally relevant lesson as well as interviewed
