A six-week study was conducted in a seventh grade reading class with 12 students who were identified as reading at least two years below grade level. A literature review showed a strong link between independent reading commitment and academic achievement. It also revealed motivation and stamina for independent reading can be significantly enhanced by teachers who provide access to book choice, instruction and personal guidance in self-selecting books, and opportunities for collaboration. During the study, students were taught strategies for book selection, provided time and one-on-one support for independent reading during class, and expected to read independently at home.
