This mixed methods study examines the research question, how can I encourage my high school general art classroom students to become more creative artists and take ownership over their learning? Through general observations, observations of specific groups of students, and assessment tools used in a teacher-driven and student-driven classroom, student motivation is explored. This study indicates that students are motivated to be more creative and take ownership over their learning in a student-driven classroom. This study also indicates that while the students in the student-driven classroom were more creative, students in the teacher-driven classroom had better technical qualities to their paintings than the student-driven class
