Provocative pedagogy: deconstructing adolescents\u27 misconceptions about sexuality with media literacy

My research and curriculum is a product of cultural curiosity and pedagogical inspiration. Since I became a mother in 2006, I have been more attune to teen pregnancy and sexuality. I wanted to better understand the world that teens live in related to sexuality and how to teach a method of critical thinking that would aid them in decision-making. I quickly learned that sexual literacy literature exists, but minutely. Instead, it is largely linked to media literacy. My research relied heavily on the media saturation of teens in a hypersexual, no consequences culture. Additionally, I studied current sex education in our schools, giving me additional insight into the problem . My curriculum is based on the movie and book franchise, Twilight. The study of the book is preceded by a media literacy unit and focuses on the sexual identity development of the central characters
