How does implementing effective literacy practices into reader\u27s workshop impact ELL students language development in a mainstream third grade classroom?

The research question addressed is, how does implementing effective literacy practices into reader\u27s workshop impact ELL students language development in a mainstream third grade classroom? The motivating factor for this capstone was a concern that ELL students are not able to fully participate in and benefit from reader\u27s workshop because of their limited English language proficiency. This capstone details: 1) cultural differences in reading and how these differences account for literacy performance of second language learners 2) literacy practices that have been proven to increase ELL students language development, and which could be implemented into reader\u27s workshop 3) creation of two units of study that focus on increasing ELL students oral language. The project concludes that certain literacy practices are beneficial to ELL students when adapted to their language needs
