This capstone project resulted in the creation of a resource to be used by middle school teachers to teach the reading and writing of poetry. The author, a middle school classroom teacher, developed several lessons to be used as one curricular unit or as lessons to supplement other units of study across the curriculum. Major influences were Georgia Heard, Nancie Atwell, and Christine Sleeter. Wiggins and McTighe\u27s Understanding by Design was used to develop the structure of the overall resource and individual lessons. The final result is a collection of sixteen lessons which emphasize modern, diverse, multicultural writers and voices
