Using active learning strategies to engage students in non-fiction texts

The research question addressed in this project was, how do active learning strategies better engage students in non-fiction texts? The motivating factor for this capstone was the overwhelming disinterest of students in non-fiction. It demonstrates one teacher\u27s research into the topic of active learning and use of a variety of active learning strategies in collaboration with Time for Kids news magazines. The research discusses what active learning is, the history behind it, how students learn and remember, and opposing views. The methods of the capstone include engaging students in activities that focus on exemplifying dignity, energy, self-control, community, and awareness. It also shows the positive impact that active learning has on a child\u27s interest in educational lessons
